Walking in the front door of the house, we all halt in our steps. Our girl is a sobbing mess as she lies on the couch, covered in her favorite throw blanket. Mack immediately shoves me out of the way and beelines right to her, swooping her up in his arms, then sits down where she was with her in his lap.

Colin’s made his way over and sits down beside Mack, reaching out and taking her hand in his, as he glances towards the television to see what she was watching. “Babe, It’s A Wonderful Life, again? You know it does this to you. Why not somethin’ funny like Elf?”

She just looks at him like his words had stabbed her right in the heart. “It was my mom’s favorite. We watched it every year up until—” She cuts off there, and we don’t need to let her finish to know what she was going to say.

“Then let’s make sure we add it to our yearly family movie night. All our little monsters will grow up lovin’ it, knowin’ it was their grandmother's favorite movie.” She smiles at Colin’s words as he reaches forward, taking the remote off the table and cutting off the television.

“You’ll be pleased with the clubhouse tonight. I think we did a pretty bang-up job decoratin’ it,” I pipe in, taking a seat in the chair to the left of the couch. Ryker comes out of the kitchen, bag of chips in hand as he takes a seat on the recliner.

“What!!” he exclaims when he sees us all looking at him. “I’m hungry, and you know I’ve got those sympathy hunger pains.” I can’t do anything but shake my head at him and his lame-ass excuse for wanting to eat.

“Dude, it’s time to give that nonsense a break. You’re just a fuckin’ pig. We literally had some burgers at the clubhouse like three hours ago, and we’ll be back there in a couple more where there’ll be dinner served,” Mack barks at him with laughter, stirring our girl into hysterics that are now on the joyful and not sad side.

“I can’t wait to see it. I’m still mad I was banned from the clubhouse and not allowed to be part of the decorating. Look around,” she says, moving her hand to gesture around the room. “Is there any doubt how valuable I would’ve been today?”

“We know, Firecracker. Prez just wants to surprise you. It’s kinda his gift to you, so don’t say anything.” Mack places a kiss on her head as he tries to calm and validate her.

“Okay then. I guess when you put it like that, it makes sense. It did give me time to finish wrapping the gifts for tonight without the four of you being in the way. I even finished the girls' gifts since Christmas will be just us, except when Dad comes over.” Looking over towards the door, I can’t help but notice the bags of gifts we walked right by.

“Do y’all need any extra time to wrap?” she hints subtly.
